The problem of the garbage patch is much too large to solve completely. We cannot take all of the trash out of the ocean, for the plastic is much too spread apart. The trash is effecting small countries, because the trash gets dumped on their steps and gets washed up on their shores, hurting their crops, which is their main income. People feel that they cannot do anything to help, but we can reduce the amount of plastic that we use on a daily basis, like not using plastic bags, using reusable water bottles, and small things like that. The problem doesn’t only affect the sea animals, it also affects us. We do will not have fish, which is a large source of vitamins A and D. The problem is impossible to fix, but we are able to keep it from getting any worse. -Abby Smith
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch may be a problem in the future because of the increase of ocean debris and how it is actually impossible to clean up. It is incredibly dangerous for the marine life living in the ocean. If it gets bigger and bigger as the years, decades, etc. go on, we may be in for some even worse trouble. My basic opinion on the Garbage Patch is that it’s a problem because of increasing ocean debris, constant trouble for marine life, and it is impossible to clean up. - Indie We can not clean up the Pacific Garbage Patch, but we can reduce our carbon footprint and our trash flow outwards into the ocean. Someday we could have less trash in are ocean. I think that there are lots of garbage around the world that we should help the world having less trash in the world. I feel like that huge amount of garbage is very bad to are ocean, we can help stop making the garbage worse. - Joy The Pacific Garbage Patch is huge, an island in itself, floating in the Pacific. For many years, it’s been growing because people keep throwing trash into the ocean. It’s already too large to clean up, so what can we do? We can reduce and recycle. If everyone does that, we could definitely reduce the amount that the Pacific Garbage Patch grows each year. I feel that the huge amount of garbage is bad, but we can stop making it worse, and start helping our planet. This problem won't get better, it will get worse without our help. We need to stop wasting, and start helping the only home we've ever known, because we'll be here for a long time. -Ryan I think it's bad to have a “landfill” in the ocean because it could kill marine life.I think that scientists should start cleaning up the garbage patch, because if they don’t, it could get worse. Every single time plastic is in the ocean, the plastic breaks down and turns into tiny bits, and could be eaten by sea animals. - Ricardo |
There are so many people who are effected by the Great Garbage Patch. These Point of Views should show you how people all over the world think about the garbage that pollutes our ocean.
Point of View 1,Tourist Industries: The coastline tourist industries are being affected by the plastic pollution that washes up on the shores. The tourist do not like the trash on the beaches that they are visiting. Sometimes dead animals that have consumed the trash wash up on the shore which looks even worse. Tourism is often a main source of money to countries small and big alike. Places like Hawaii are being heavily affected by plastic. The wind carries the plastic from the coast to inland. As you know, Hawaii made up of small islands that can be easily covered by plastic. So not only the coastline is being effected, the inland areas are also being affected to. Half of the world’s population lives on the coastline. So it is dangerous to the coastline to be polluted. Point of View 2, Companies: Companies that manufacture plastic aren’t all trying to save the planet. Some are trying to clean up their act, and others instead try to hide the pollution. Nevertheless, it always is discovered, and the Pacific Garbage Patch was no exception. It grows bigger every year, and could spell disaster for the planet, while companies hope that researchers will never trace the plastic back. Some companies also enlist the help of volunteers to try to lessen impacts on the environment. One comment from EcoWatch: Quote:” …Eriksen suspected, at the inception of 5 Gyres, plastic pollution isn’t just a North Pacific phenomenon but rather a global problem with global implications for fisheries, tourism, marine ecosystems and human health.” Unquote. Some companies don’t like to pollute, though. They do want to do their part. Point of View 3, Fishermen: Fishermen everyday go out to the ocean to reel in fish. When there is tons of plastics in the ocean being washed to shore, they may feel like the fish are being harmed by the plastic (which makes more dead fish) and that makes less income for the fisherman. With the garbage patch in “action”, it makes the ocean less pleasant and clean making the fishermen feel bad. They can also lose their jobs at companies due to more dead fish and less alive and healthy fish to get for people to eat at restaurants and buy at stores. Point of View 4, Marine Life: While Scripps Institution of Oceanography were on a expedition and found a sea insect laying eggs on piece of plastic instead of seashells or wood the team later found 10% of fish that had ingested plastic. This could lead to soon to all sea life. |
